  wasn't the temp as much as the speed it was climbing that was a concern. I've never seen it get above 145f and even then it would drop fairly quick when I would get going. My thermostat might be stuck open so I'm going to look into that. My gauge probe is on a flange about 1\2 way between the rad and the outlet from the head. Was a bit worried it was low on coolant which would give an inaccurate reading on my gauge. Talked to some other TDI swap guys and they say in cold weather it never warms up but on warm days they get to operating Temp. I'm thinking that was just the case. My 60km trip was a cold night around 2c and towing the boat home it was probably 12c out and sunny
 
Anything below 180'f  is pretty cool temp  for the VW diesel . Especially if your temp sensor is up top , at the exist of the cylinder head...

To low engine temperature , results in inefficient combustion , which leads to increase fuel consumption , increase wear , and reduced engine life span ....
