yota axle seal see pic

So I blew up my birf, question is is that seal in the tube supposed to be on that side or on the side of the knuckle? It's metal (what's left of seal?) Since it is metal I can't seem to pull it out? Where does this go? is it part of the differential?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

The scratches won't hurt anything. The seal goes on the knuckle side. Dunno how yours got pushed inside the housing unless the person who installed them didn't have a clue. You'll have to deform it (squish it) to get it out, or pull the 3rd. There's no such thing as a back splash ring. An exploded view of the knuckle would help you a lot. Ten seconds on Google got me this:

Hope this helps.

This was a metal ring just inside the ball (cup) where it looks like axle is pinches. Th  other side had the oil seal as seen in diagram but also had a metal or brass ring. It doesn't squegy the axle shaft like the seal, is why I call it a splash guard for the oil so at extreme angles th  oil doesn't hit the seal so hard.
