Tracker/Sidekick 1.6L starter motors - auto vs manual???

I am curious if this crush gasket seal / shim is required on a Samurai trans with a 1.6L Tracker/Sidekick engine using a Trail Tough or Petroworks adapter plate?

Got it thanks .yes I installed the modified block plate ( that's what I call it  :) good,  I thought maybe shimmying was required to change the tooth angles .thought maybe I missed something  :o

Well I made up some cardboard measuring gauges verify for myself the differences between the two starters, and it did look as if the snout is cast differently even though they appear identical to the naked eye, but it brings the 8 tooth gear and slightly closer.

The bigger problem was that the trail tough engine mount to fit the Tracker 1.6 into the Samurai needed ground down quite a bit at the edge in order to fit the longer automatic trans starter. I got this all taken care of three weeks ago or so, but have since shattered my kneecap and had surgery & am recovering now.

The angles on the photos are not exactly identical, but you get the gist of it, they look pretty close to the naked eye, without the cardboard cutout gauge and some indexing drill bits in the bolt holes, it looks alarmingly different since the 8 tooth gear is noticeably smaller diameter than the 9 tooth.

On the plus side, my good buddy did drop off to me a VW 1.9TDI ALH engine, Land Rover 300TDI injection pump, and a Garret GT2052 turbo...I will still you're doing a head gasket and timing belt and a few other things to the Suzuki gasser while it is in there, and driving on it for the summer until I get the most appropriate Toyota transmission and Land Cruiser transfer case or Jeep AX15 and Dana 18 setup...

Starters, I got a new one, the 17194N #. from the 96/97 sidekick automatic. Rockauto. Pics show its not a 1.7kv, but a 1.4kv. Shorter yes. But I installed it, and is spinning well. 8 teeth.
Rockauto said, 1.4 manual, and 1,7 kv automatic. 118 $. I will have to keep looking for a 9tooth, gear at least. My old slow starter, rebuilt unit is longer, 8 tooth Bosch. Remanufactued.  it's good to have spares, I'll get it rebuilt for the long deepw oodles trips. The new one does spin fast, so will find out how long it's good for.
