this can be debated and argued untill the cows come home, but the 102'' whip is still unbeatable,there is a differance in antennas,no matter how they are built.
 
actually 108" is electrically perfect for a 1/4 wave antenna, ie, CB band.

That's where the 6" spring comes in. You can tune a CB to talk on a coat hanger or a piece of wire. Done that a bunch of times and the military I'm sure still either uses it or teaches how to make one, it's called a dipole and works brilliantly if you have the room for it.
