Back To My Roots: A Suzuki Samurai Project

Is that how I obtain taller gears on this thing?

The Samurai high range is actually around a 1.49? Or something like that. With the tcase gears, it'll increase your final drive ratio, so with the larger tires, it'll have a little more usable torque. It potentially could lower your top end speed, but with larger tires, I doubt you'd notice.

You should play around with the gear calculator, and see if you think you'd like the RPM's at certain speeds.

Has anyone in their travels seen halogen fog/driving lights like these, with this specific type of stone guard on them? I'm looking for clear/white lenses and ones that do not have chrome bodies? I had this type on my first Samurai back in 1991, when these were prevalent and you could buy this type of fog light kit at any department store or parts store for $14.99. I'm looking for a set for the current Samurai and can't find anything. If I come up empty-handed, I will be forced to mount Hella 450's on my bumper.

You might try driving using the GPS in your phone and see what the actual speed is. You might be surprised.

Did a GPS test tonight. Speedometer reads 5mph lower than actual. So when I did 75mph last weekend, I was actually doing 80mph. That is scary!

These lamps look pretty close? (Chrome body though)

Thanks for the links. Those all have chrome bodies, which I wanted to avoid, but I don't think any all black ones exist anymore. I may pick up a set and just paint the bodies black.

Why the desire for old school halogen fog lamps? They just ain't very bright with a 55 watt bulb.

I put on some ridgid 360 series. Very bright with good yellow / orange color. The yellow light helps *warm* the cool light spectrum from the led headlamps.

My goal is for a period correct look, not modern lighting performance. My first Samurai had these lights and I want to match what I had on that vehicle. The same goes for the radio. I went way out of my way to find the exact model radio I had in my original Samurai. I could VERY easily have picked up a modern bluetooth, USB-ported radio that would make in-car entertainment far better than I'll ever get out of my 1991 Pioneer cassette deck. But it will never "feel" like it did in 1991, which is my main objective here.

Hmmm probally doesn't feel like period correct with the diesel....😏

Update:

I installed a 3" Drop Pitman Arm, due to the crazy bump steer that has been extremely noticeable since upgrading to the new wheels and tires. I got one from Zuki4x5 on here and got to work:

The stock pitman arm did not come off without a fight. It had been on there for 34 years, and it surely showed. I rented a Pitman Arm Puller from the local parts store and it wouldn't budge. A 4 pound hammer and gallons of penetrating oil didn't help either. Finally I decided to pull the steering gear and have at it on the workbench.

I literally had to cut it off:

Once it was off, I boxed up the rented tool and got my deposit back :D

Once everything was back together, I noticed a lot of play in the ball joint at the drag link. I don't know if I caused it when I separated it from the old pitman arm, or if it was just worn out due to age. Regardless, I replaced it.

I was faced with the dilemma of whether to get Hella 450 Auxiliary lights or search to find some old school louver lights like I had on my old Samurai. To keep with the nostalgia theme, I chose louver lights:

The only ones that I could find had chrome bodies, which I didn't like. The ones on my old Samurai were all black and seeing that there isn't any chrome on this Samurai, I was determined to make these black as well:

The first step was to sand off all the chrome plating:

The second step was to spray paint them with Krylon Fusion Matte Black:

Much better!

Wiring was next. The kit did not come with a relay harness, just a single wire with a fuse holder, so I had to make one. Luckily, I had a standard relay and holder on hand. I decided to mount it where all the other non-original equipment relays reside, in the engine bay.

I spotted a nice spot for it right next to the radiator fan relay:

swYHhkz.jpg

I had to tap into key-on power for the new light switch, so I grabbed it from the rear defrost switch, which is right next to the where the new switch will be:

3M4gTg5.jpg

I drilled a hole in the dash for the new switch and routed the wires:

PxwIl3M.jpg

In keeping with the nostalgia theme, I scrapped the kit-included toggle switch and found the exact same style switch my old Samurai had for this one....right down to the matching factory illumination amber color:

42Jva6a.jpg

The geometry of the factory steering stabilizer doesn't really work great with the new pitman arm. Its new position puts a lot of torque on it, so I ordered a new KYB stabilizer that will be mounted in a different location, down by the axle. But for now, everything is buttoned up and ready to enjoy:

Looks good! Those pitman arms are a pain! Last time I took a stock one off on mine, I had the puller as tight as I could possibly get it, then just started heating the arm around the splines with a propane torch. When it popped, it popped hard! In my opinion, cutting it off is the best option if you don't intend to reuse it.

Those cast pot-metal pullers are complete junk.......I have one and it bent with the 1st use.......and no, it couldn't get the job done.

I fabricated my own. Much better and worth the effort of making. It doesn't bend, and works for landcruiser boxes.

Your new DL angle is still not perfect.......but better than it must have been before. Is the worst of the bump steer gone?
