Oh man thats exactly what I have been wanting to do. I think I am going to use Diamond Plate though. How did you do the lip where the hinges are?

I made the cut with a 4" cutting disk.  The hing is an aluminum piano hing. 

The hing is riveted between the bottom of the cover and a piece of 90 degree angle on the fixed part of the cover.  The angle provides support for the center of the top.

The angle is the same as what you see on the bottom of the lid.
