onboard welders anyone?

Been doin a lot of lookin on YouTube and there are lots of people with welders made from alternators, a few with them mounted on vehicles, but I can't find any that have good descriptions or even halfway decent footage of how they work. My question is has anyone seen or had experience with them? Or theoretically how you would set one up?

I haven't seen ones using an alternator. Have you looked into arc welding with 2 batteries and a set of jumper cables? I would imagine it would be similar.

I've seen the battery method done but I dunno, it seems more "temporary" I guess. I've been looking at getting a welder and then I stumbled upon some videos on YouTube of guys using alternators to make homemade welders and I thought would it be possible to use a vehicles engine to run the alternator/welder and yes it's been done. So I figured it wouldn't be too difficult to a secondary alternator on my tracker solely for welding, just get a used alternator and fab up some bracketry and the welding components I can get for "cheap" from work, all in all I'm thinking this route would be much cheaper and more convenient than actually buying a welder...

I thought you were going to use it as a trail welder. I'm not sure I would go that route for a main welder. It doesn't sound very adjustable. Some of these welds your life and other peoples lives are going to have depend on. Is it worth saving a couple hundred bucks?

Me personally I wouldn't trust it for more than a trail fix.

Part 2 So ya dosn't has ta hunt fer it. Not much more info in it but here it is.

Interesting mod I may just try one some day. I believe it would be better running a wire gun though.

Somebody on this forum had a welder for sale hat runs on 12 or 24 volts.

you used to be able to buy them... Premier Power Welder they were called.
