First, this was not my idea, this idea is all over the internet, has been for years, I just made it cheap and Zuki specific.
This is only for vehicles with removable headrests, like the stock Samurai seats.
The part of this that use to be pricey was the actual camera mount, sure, you can use duct tape or even a coarse threaded bolt to go into your camera's mount, but it's nice to have one that is adjustable. You can use any mount, but these I found make it cheap.
I was at the Dollar Tree and I found these nice little mini tripods, of course, only $1 each (as you can see, I bought 2).
You will only need the head off the tripod, take out the phillips head screw and remove the legs, save them for some other fun project or throw them away.
Here it is separated.
Find you a piece of square aluminum tube, I got this stuff laying around everywhere. You could buy it, but you can also get it from old tent supports, beach chairs, etc... Line it up beside your headrest, mine is from a Samurai JX seat. Mark where the posts are and drill holes big enough so the bar slides up onto the posts.
Slide onto head rest, make sure you have a good fit.
Drill a hole for the tripod head/camera mount and secure it in place with a screw or whatever you can find in your spare hardware drawer.
Now just slide the headrest back into the seat back sandwiching the mount between the seat and headrest. Attach camera and start recording.
Could it be more basic? Yes, you can use a piece of wood instead of the aluminum I specified. Can it be more involved? Certainly, go for it, many people online do other designs that use expensive camera mounts and a couple pieces of tubing, wing nuts, etc...
Caution: During hard driving this thing could go into the side of your head. Ouch! You can pad the end, mount it on the driver's seat, mount it between the driver seat and passenger (both head rests, but both seats would have to be in same position), etc... Just use common sense.
Would I use this on a really nice camera? Sure, with a safety strap. The good thing about the adjustable tripod head is that you can face the camera out the windshield, out the back, at your instrument cluster, at your feet/hand for driving instruction, etc...
It cost me a dollar plus tax to make this for a vehicle I don't even have and less than 10 minutes. After I took the last photo I dismantled it so I can use the tripod head on a different project.
Nearly any digital camera made in the last 10 years will have a video feature that will capture video that is perfectly acceptable for web viewing. Take your old camera, make a cheap mount, and go out and make us some videos!
