The instructions that come with the factory Inclinometer/Altimeter dual-gauge instrument cluster for the Samurai say to splice the yellow/red wire of the dual-gauge to the yellow/red lights wire under the lower dash cover, and to connect the ring-end on the black wire of the dual-gauge to the ground screw under the lower dash cover. The only function of this wiring is to turn on the lights in the gauge when you turn on the headlights (or parking lights). The gauges themselves are mechanical and need no wiring. If you follow the factory wiring as described above, the gauge lights are on brightly whenever the headlights or parking lights are on. If you dim the dash lights by turning the knob on the lower left of the dash, the lights in the dual-gauges stay on bright.
If you want the lights in the dual-gauge cluster to dim when you dim the dash lights, then splice the black wire from the dual-gauge cluster into the red/green wire on the back of the dash light dimming knob switch instead of connecting the black wire of the dual-gauge cluster to ground. Leave the red/yellow wire connected to the red/yellow lights wire. The lights in the dual-gauge cluster will now be at the same brightness as the main dash lights through the entire range of brightness adjustment. When the dash lights are bright, the lights in the dual-gauge cluster will be bright, when the dash lights are dim or off, the dual-gauge cluster lights will be dim or off.
