I have a '94 Tracker with an 8V engine in it. Recently I replaced the distributor and dummy me didn't notice how the engine was timed with the distributor. I took the timing belt cover off and lined up the timing marks at 12:00 on both the crank and cam. Then I installed the distributor with the #1 cylinder lined up with the rotor button. I cranked and cranked and cranked but no ignition. I then advanced my spark plug wires one space clockwise and twisted my distributor. It fired off but ran rough. Do I have it 180 degrees out-of-time? How do I correctly set this up?

If I had $100 for every time I've posted this...

When the timing marks on the cam drive are lined up, #4 is TDC on compression.  From this point, rotate the crankshaft one turn, so that the mark on the belt drive pulley is opposite the zero mark on the cam belt cover, and #1 is TDC on compression, then install the distributor with the rotor pointing to #1 wire.

In this position, the center of the rotor should point to the cap bolt hole on the disty housing.

Oh, and why have 2 "E"s on the cam sprocket that are supposed to be "adjacent", heaven forbid some one wants to time one of these 1.6L 16 valve pieces of ..

bad tps?

the tps, is what gives the instant enrich , the moment you move your right foot.

(course fuel pressure must be good)

I hate to beat a dead horse here, but the information below confuses me. please read my questions for clarification.
I have installed a 1.6 8V with a carb.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If I had $100 for every time I've posted this...

When the timing marks on the cam drive (top pulley?) are lined up( up as in the direction - up or lined up as in pointed down and lined up with the crank pulley?), #4 is TDC on compression.  From this point, rotate the crankshaft one turn, so that the mark on the belt drive pulley (assuming crank pulley?) is opposite the zero mark on the cam belt (top pulley?)cover, and #1 is TDC on compression, then install the distributor with the rotor pointing to #1 wire.

In this position, the center of the rotor should point to the cap bolt hole on the disty housing.

Thanks for any clarification.

Here's the simple way to do it.........from skyhiranger

 Simplified version.....
Line up crank pulley mark so it points at "0" on the timing belt cover.
If cam pulley mark is at 12:00, then #4 piston is at TDC....so set the distributor so the rotor points at #4 tower on the cap.
If cam pulley mark is at 6:00, then #1 piston is at TDC....so set the distributor so the rotor points at #1 tower on the cap.

or, if you dont want to pull cam cover

crank to tdc 0 deg mark
remove spark plug 1,
with any rubber tube blow in to spark hole 1. (if scared use compression gauge and watch pressure build)
if you cant blow , good, if can blow, rotate 360 deg CW.  TDC cyl.#1 compression stroke top.
now #1 wire is near dizzy #1 post, if not make it so. then
16v ccw, 1,3,4,2
8v, cw 1,3,4,2

static timing done.
start motor do dynamic. with freeze jumper.

My apologies for the lack of clarity.

The timing marks on the cam drive being lined up means the lower pulley mark is opposite its mark on the oil pump, and the upper pulley mark is opposite its mark on the cylinder head.

The mark on the belt drive pulley being lined up with the mark on the cam belt cover means the mark on the alternator drive belt pulley being lined up with the TDC mark on the scale moulded into the plastic cover which covers the cam belt.

I hope that is clear.

E up for 16v, cam key down  ( no book says where to put the key , not even FSM)

and titty up on 8v , or 40/50A up and again, key down.

it is reported to me some EU countries, have better marked cogs. with no false marks.
but these to represent the 2 most confusing off all

If you find one even more confusing,  send me a photo so i can  put it on my web page.

they are NOT all the same, ( rules are) but the looks can be vastly diff.

revised with fresh clearer photos for 16v motor (96 shown)

and a new link to my , bad crank key page.

my small contribution.

cheers.
