Anybody that has had to replace a fuel pump in a fuel injected Samurai know that the pumps are around $200 [smiley=cussing.gif]. Someone on this website recommended a ford escort fuel pump ;D.

I modded a fuel pump for a 92 Ford Escort 1.9. The pump was only $65 [thumbsup] at Advanced Auto Parts, and I got AutoZone match the price(there price is $75).

What you will have to do:
1. Buy Fuel pump AND strainer/sock $75
2. Pull old pump
3. Take a dermal or other cutting device and cut the holder for the bigger bottom (just remove the lip, and it should fit good)
4. Install strainer/sock on bottom to hold in place
5. Remove old solder-less connectors and replace with new solder-less connectors to fit different style pump (I soldered the wires on)
6. When reinstalling complete assembly you will find the new pump makes the total length 1/2-3/4 inch longer, just push it down real hard and install the bolts (this will help hold pump in place) (if you worked on the holder some you maybe able to solve this problem and not have to jam the assembly in)

I ONLY use this Samurai for trail riding, and have not given the new setup a real testing, just pulled it out of the driveway and back in. I will TRY to remember to reply to this post after a few weeks to post the longer term outcome. The total install with mods took me about 1 hour not including the hour I spent sucking out the full tank of gas.

When you are replacing the Fuel pump it's also a good idea to swap the fuel filter ($25 at Advanced Auto Parts, $30 at AutoZone)

Well I never updated this post...

The pump worked fine for a short time, I have burned out 3 pumps the summer one of them being the escort pump and two samurai pumps. The fuel tank has tons of rust inside it so I will be redoing it once more and this time I am going to use POR15 to seal the tank. I lost the origanal pics, so once I have it all back apart I will try to get some new pics and post them. I will once again be running the Ford pump, unless I can find a used stock Samurai one for cheap in the next few days..

Mental Note to self: Never replace the fuel pump in a rusty tank without first sealing the tank, or repleacing it. The rust will soon kill your new pump as well.

post again.   I'm in the process of a 16v swap and would like a tank with the pump inside.

I will have to look around when I get home to see if I still have the photos or not... but if you have a dremal type of tool, just cut right along the part that sticks out 1/4" it will increace the hole size just enoght to make the ford escort pump fit... then you will need to bend the pickup assembaly slighty to get it back in the tank...dont have a pic of that, just bent to fit, as I went.

I've been using a Toyota pick-up in-tank pump with almost no mods for over 3 years, no problem.  They are the same mfg.  Cheeeep on Ebay.  Good luck!

Samurai 92                                   autozone part# E2111 1.3 motor
Mazda Miata 99-???                     autozone part# E2111  1.8 motor
Mazda Miata 98 not listed as a car for that year?????
Mazda Miata 90-97                      autozone part# E8229 1.6-1.8 motor
Hyundai Accent 97                       autozone part# E8229 1.5 motor
Side/Track 96                               autozone part# E8229 1.6 motor

Now this tells us that the only difference is fuel pressure that the pumps make... Unfortunately it's hard to find aftermarket pumps for a Samurai or Miata 99+..... BUT the great thing is that if you search "miata fuel pump" at motors.ebay.com you will find 10-30 listing for new and used pumps (make sure you are buying one that will fit 94-97 Miata or 99-02 Miata)...the new ones start at $50 + $5 shipping... and go up from there. You could buy a high performance pump for the Miata, BUT the stock one already pushes more gas than the stock Samurai...so a stock one for a Miata or track/kick is an upgrade.

Now take that information to ebay and you can find all sorts of  fuel pumps for the Miata/Samurai for $50-70

here are the fuel presures and ALL other information:

As you can see from this information, the Tracker/Sidekick fuel pump turns off at 6.0 and the Samurai Fuel pump cuts off at 5.5 but the flow per minute is a little lower (that was the shock to me) I think that it is a good swap...but thats up to you.. it's only a savings of $150
The Escort fuel pump also runs simular pressures as the Tracker/sidekick/Miata/Accent...BUT you have to mod the pickup assembaly to run the Escort pump....

All the other pumps do NOT need modding to fit....they are just a little different presures and flow per minute.

Well I ended up picking up a new Samurai fuel tank with pump, and then the Samurai sat for almost 2 years without being started. I just ordered a new fuel pump for a Mazda Miata for $28 delivered off of ebay.  ;D

Most EFI fuel pumps run about the same pressure. The differences in pressures are dictated by the fuel pressure regulator. ;)
