Well after a wasted set of hinges from a little 31" tire I decided it was time.  I contacted Scott (aka Rockrat) and got a bearing tube from him.  Some 2" box and all is better.

The hinge is made up of a bearing tube that was machined by Rock 4x (Rockrat).  It is used with a 1" or 1 1/16" trailer axle spindle and bearing set (I still need to pick up a cap for it).  I ended up using the 1 1/16" spindle because that was what TSC had in stock.  Both sizes will work and both share the same races.

For the latch I ended up using a 1/2" bolt with a "T" handle welded onto it.  The mount is made up of a piece of 2x2 box and a piece of 2" angle with a nut welded to the back side.

For the tire mount I am planning on installing a spare front hub and spindle setup.  I just have to pick up the hardware and I will be all set to mount the tire on it.

Looks really nice.  [thumbsup]
I ripped my whole tailgate off a few years ago, just been running around with no gate since then.  I need to do one up myself.

Could you post up more pics of the spindle mount and the weld at the spindle to 2x2.  How did you fish mouth the square pipe?

The 2x2 was fish mouthed using a 2.5" hole saw on the drill press.  There are some more pics in my album on here.....

Very nice work!   ;)  How much do you figure you've got into it?  I bet it's a lot less than buying one...

Total I am figuring less than $50.  That includes the bearing tube from Rockrat, spindle/bearings, and the piece of 2x2.  Everything else I had laying around the garage.  Add in another $15 to replace the tailgate hinges that I wasted with the spare on there  ;D
