This section goes along with my original post  Toyota Drivetrain info which was mainly on the mini truck models (79-85).

Landcruisers use pretty much the same setup as the minitrucks except the rear diff is offset.  Mini truck knuckles may be used on the fj40 axles to do a disc break conversion using mini truck parts but the knuckle will have to be clearanced to fit the fj birfield.  Although rear40 axles are offset to the right I know where you can get custom build landcruiser housings with the rear diff is centered which allows the use of the mini truck shafts in the rear. Cruiser axles are comparable strength wise to the 3/4 axles.

Fj60/62 axles are pretty much the same as Fj40 axles except they are only longer on the long side.

FZJ80s are the ultimate toyota axle in my opinion. All Tie rod and balljoint ends are of 3/4 size/strength. The axles are as well. They use a reverse rotation front end and are high pinion from the factory. Many of these axles are avaialble w/ the factory electronic locker which is a costly chunk of change. They are also coil sprung. The actuators for the locker have a cable kit to do away w/ the electronics but at one point there was a clearance issue with the parts for the cable kit not clearing the coil spring like it should.

These axles are all passenger drop but w/ removing the knuckles and flipping the housing around, you can remove the 3rd member, redrill the stud holes, cut the cover off and weld it on where the 3rd sat originally and have a driver drop axle.

Cruisers also use a 9 3/4 ring gear.

I found a guy locally that has a complete 1991 Land Cruiser (FJ60???) front differential. I know it has the coil mounts in the front of it and uses the larger ring gear, but what benifits are there to using this diff instead of the earlier model axles? Also, the guy said it was All-Time 4WD and that because of this the axle splines show wear.

60/62 axles were leaf sprung. The axle your talking about is the 80 series axle. Benefits would be first off that all your parts ( tie rod, balls joints, and such) are all caompariable in size to to what is found on a 3/4 ton truck. This goes for the inners as well. It's reverse rotation, and high pinion as well from the factory. Being all time 4wd may account for spline wear but I would be more concerend on how they are wore as to wether or not that is the cause. In any case find out if it has the factory equiped e-locker. If so  and the price is right go for it. I may would even get it if if not equiped w/ the e-locker. You can get the chromo inners and a set of Gen 5 Newfields and have a VERY duarable axle. Especially under a zuk. I know of first hand how everyone bust the birfs backing up, but w/ the new gen 5 newfields, 38.5's, graby clutch,305 v8,grabby clutch, and weighing over 4000lbs, I've seen thse things pull a cruiser backwards in a 45* nose down situation dumping the clutch at 2500 w/ a blown front bead and survive to this day.
