Ranger Rick from ORC was doing this exact thing, I even helped come up with the name IN.S.E.R.T. (INdiana Suzuki Emergency Response Team) They would hunt lost hikers, help with evacs, etc. I think it's a fantastic idea! Maryland also has a way you can volunteer to carry emergency workers to and from work when it's snowing...

yes actully i had rick in mind after i posted
(i acctully read all the postes on ORC....lots of long midwatches... so much for 30 mins aday huh)
I really think this would open lots of doors to us if we had groups doing trail patrols and what not. might even loosen up some lift laws

I personally think the easiest way to get to started would be to talk to the local folks who volunteer to go look for lost people. I was approached by the volunteer fire dept/rescue squad in a small town south of Wilmington, NC about bringing my truck and teaching their guys to drive offroad, which is another way you may get an "in" for that kind of system. It could be set up like a VFD maybe?

If your not a member of The Blue Ribbon Coalition then that should be the 1st thing you do to promote trail  access . They fight for us everyday and they are winning . In addition to that all of us need to do things as described above . I think its a great idea to volunteer or rigs to help when possible .

yes I had thought of the VFD avenue and yes a ground roots this would be an efective start... as i have ( was a voli back home and did use my old rig as did many of my buddys for these local situations)
I was thinki however on the large scale much like how we use the AUX  (cg) in our mission.  the use of ORV's and opperaters in many use would be a great benifit to DOT and HLS ( boarder pat's, road closures, lost persons, disasters and much more)
and it would not have to be every ORV and operater but on a volanteer status

I have my rig set up to help out when we have brush fires locally.  We have many areas that he trucks will not even consider getting into but my Zuk with 55 gallons in the bed does great.  I am also a very active member of the VFD as well as an amateur radio opperator as was mentioned in the NEOW posts.

Start with your local community and see where it goes from there.  It would be nice to see something set up regionally though too.

I think you'll probably get the best support from local enforcement when volunteering for lost persons, disaster relief, emergency personnel transport and access to areas where they couldn't get without a built rig. Also utilizing your real world offraod experience for training them. I would suggest getting some EMT's or  survival specialist in your group to help train. I rmember Rick had to stay overnight with a child in below freezing temps when searching for him/her in the woods and without his training they may have both perished. Any training you can bring to them to make yourself an asset versus a thrill hound will work in your favor.

I understand that, maybe I can suggest it this way, get one started, then you can tell others how to do it, once some are started then you can link up and expand. Call around and see what it would take
