I could sure use a good close-up on the cutting some of you guys have done on the rear of the front fender wells to fit your bigger tires.  I have installed 1 1/2 inch coil spacers and 2 inch body lift from Sky manufacturing, but when I tried my 31" tires from my Samurai on for size, they are butting up against the rear of the wheel well; what I would have thought was part of the fire wall.  I don't mind cutting or banging to make things fit, but I don't want to cut a hole into the passenger compartment.  Is that the fire wall, or is that just part of an inner fender or something?

Yes in some cases that firewall where the tire rubs is right at your left foot.

I pushed the Left foot well back about 2" --3" for clearance on my 4dr.

For 31's I usually just trim the fender back to the fire wall.

Hey, we trimmed the fenders back and wound up not even having to beat on the firewall at all.  It worked out pretty well, though I probably need to do something about the air intake ductwork left where the DS fender used to be.  The 235's that I had on this tracker had been rubbing on the back, but with the 2" body lift that we installed, the 31's only just barely rub when it's fully stretched/stuffed.  We'll probably do a little trimming and banging to establish just a little more clearance there.

Do you have any more specs on your rig?  More pics?  Lift kits and types?  I am planning on running 33's and need some info regarding trimming, etc.  Thanks ;D

OK. Calmini front winch bumper. Calmini rear swing-arm bumper. Warn M6000 winch. Calmini 6" combo body/suspension lift. Calmini Anvil front axle housing with ARB air lockers front & back, and 5.83:1 R&P's. 4.24:1 low range. Full Calmini belly armor. Safari Snorkel. Purple mirrors (they WERE red). Heather Galvin's Bikini top. Hawk Strictly Suzuki anodized aluminum shifter knobs (very important). Crown Royal bag to cover snorkel when trailering. Toyota 4Runner CV axles up front. Calmini 30% stronger rear axles in back. 11 brass bells suspended all around the Calmini interior roll-cage. Numerous stickers from Wicked Brew Espresso Shop in Moab, around the inside. 4-door Sidekick (cloth) headrests. Roll cage padding. TrailTough Samurai Fender Flares. Hmm... 15X8 rims with 2-3/4" backspacing. BFG Mud Terrains in 33 X 10.50. Rockstomper synthetic winch rope (1/4" X 175 feet!). I am sure I'm missing something...

Hi, I cut back the lower rear of the front fenders by cutting up from the bottom of the fender to the lip about 8 inches from the bottom. I overlapped the two pieces and had the overlap welded at the lip. I then used spray undercoat to seal the inside overlap. Here are a couple of pictures I installed rubber flairs on the truck so some of the details are obscured. I used pop rivits to hold everything in place until i got it welded.

I thought I'd share what I did today in just under 2 hours

with these tools:

Inner fenders removed...

First cut

I used the plyers to fold the lip straight

I cut in as far as the seam sealer

Then folded the 2 pinch welded pieces of metal back(but at the firewall)

The plyers got it to the point where I could use the hammer

Self explanitory...

I then folded that piece up and even with the other pieces, then cut a triangle piece off the bottom of the fender, and made a new lip with the plyers, and the hammer

The finished product

And an inside shot

Inner fenders re-installed, and the tires straight. There's a good 2.5" between the tire and the inner fender. My current worn tires measure 28" exact, and I'm mounting used 31-10.5's which measure 30.5", that's just under 1.5" more in radius, plus some extra width. I've already mocked up a jig on a piece of cardboard that fit around the tire to check for clearance. The tightest spot was .75", and I'm not worried about that for street driving, I'm mounting the tires in the next couple days, so we'll see what happens!

I have about 2" of lift with coil spacers, and 15"x7" wheels. I'm going to be able to run a 31" tire for street driving, and very mild wheeling. I have a 2" body lift I bought from Sky Manufacturing(not installed yet), that will help for heavier wheeling, but I wanted to do this first to show that it doesn't take much cutting to clear the tire with the right rim, and you don't have to sacrafice the outer fender.

The 31's fit great, the shop I went to let me try one first, before they installed the rest, they were excited and said - "Yeah! put them on!"
So, here's a couple pics, I had a chance to work the suspension a bit too, and turn the wheels to check for clearance.
