What NC beaches can you drive on? "Legally!"

My wife and I drove all the way down to Kill Devil Hills from Norfolk thinking we could drive on the beach. All the beach access signs were coverd over with no driving on beach signs.
We turned around and went back home. At work the next day a woman I work with told me if I had driven a little further down to Nags Head we would have been able to access the beach there.  
Oh well:, it was a scenic drive anyway.

Legally you can do various parts of the outer banks. Check with the NC beach Buggy Association website for the details on that. Carolina Beach and Fort Fisher year round as well as various parts of Emerald Isle beach during the winter but its by permit only.

hey hows it going, i know you can drive on North Topsail Beach, but only in a little area, not much fun.  And if you are military, then you can get a beach pass if you show up with a 4x4 and get on onslow beach. There is alot more area to play on.

I also belive you can do Ocean Isle beach  but now that I think about it im not sure of the 2 between ocean and emerald but one of them you can.

Hi Lost,

Actually ya can only drive a small distance on the soundside of the inlet. There is a sign prohibiting vehicles going on to the oceanside.

I live down in Holly Ridge right now but will be relocating to J'town considering I detail cars at a dealership. Maybe we can get up some time and do some wheeling once I get my zuk back on the road.

spida anytime! what ya got left to do? yeah i shoulda been alittle more specific about Topsail. on hwy 210 when you come onto the island you gotta take the first left heading north all the way until it turns into beach, thats the only place to wheel there. we were there about a year ago and this guy had a brand new yj there stock tires and all, got it stuck in a little one foot wide stream, tire buried in the wet sand. my buddies bronco couldnt pull him out he would just sink, so we went lookin for help, 2 hours later when we found an off road towtruck, all you could see was the windshield and rollcage:o and if you wanna get on lejune, give them a call, or if ya need the number ill look for it, because im not sure if there are any lame restrictions.

If you'd have gone down to Pea Island the south end is open as is the North and South ends of Ocracoke Island as well. On the south end of Pea Island there is about 5 miles of open beach, just be careful about the areas with shell grit it's like greased ball bearings! You'll know those areas because the sand grain size gets a lot larger.

while you are in the area (pea island) keep going down hwy 12 about 50 mi or so and you will go straight to the tallest brick lighthouse in the country! not to mention cool eats and a real nice play area on the beach(right near the lighthouse) fairly secluded but just enough traffic to help if you get in a jam... I just came back from there and it was a BLAST! Great spot for you & the wife! Hope it helps

Driving on the beach OK on Outer Banks

Corolla  (extreme north) above Duck about 20 miles  Very cool  with the town of Crova at the North end only accessable by beach.  They have street signs and houses but no roads just sandy trails, some quite challenging.  They also have their own Volunteer Fire Dept in a town with no roads.   VERY COOL..  Look it up on Map Quest  Zoom in and follow Sandfiddler Road North of Corolla to the VA line.  Sandfidler road is the Beach ;D;D there is no road and no other real roads off of it, only a few street signs in the sand.  AWSOME PLACE

 Certin area's of Nags head in the (off season ONLY) with Beach Buggy or Town Permit.

Oregan Inlet  (middle about 7 miles below town of Nags head on hwy 12)  on the ocean side, about 6 miles worth from public beach access to the inlet and back around under the bridge

Rodanthe Salvo Waves (Just south of Pea island wild life refuge)
      OK to drive from Rodanthe pier to Avon in the off season
In season Summer South of Salvo to Avon (about 12 miles) all beach and some parts are desolate and can get nasty with high tide coming all the way up to the dunes.    Also some trails to sound side off of Hwy 12

Small section south of Avon (2-4 miles)   Also Some trails sound side Around Canadian Hole

Buxton from the light house to the POINT and back to the airport at Frisco about 8 - 10 miles.  Nice challenging and can find some trails washes and some deep standing brackish water.

At the town of Hatteras Just past the Ferry to the end of the island (Fort Clark) about 5 - 6 miles some trails hills and bowls.

Ocracoke  North end Ocean side of the ferry.  Just before the town of Ocracoke all the way to the point at the end of the island  about 5 -8 miles.  SOme of the access roads are near 2 miles long.  This is the part that is on the top 10 US beaches.  It is beautiful     Also some awsome trails sound side that I have yet to explore...

And the there is My DREAM TRIP to Portsmouth Island 8)8)  Just need 5 trucks a 3 day weekend (NON HOILDAY) and people who like to rough camp with no facilities.... Best time is Sept Oct as long as the tropical storms are not threatening....     Ferry ride is $75 round trip

I am waiting for a tranny from Billy BOb ( a.k.a. Lewis Scherer). Once I get it, I can install it within a day.

I din't know the base would allow people to ride the trails on board. I was always unner the impression that they were off-limits to all but tactical vehicles. I will have to look into it. Send me a pm with the phone number I need to call.
