on my sidekick when i hold the gas pedal in the same spot, with the transmission in neutral my engine surges or the idle comes up then drops down and it keeps the pattern predictably..not a ton maybe 200 rpm or so but noticable.is there a way i can adjust that? what could the problem be? thanks

I would say check your compression.  you could have a cyl or two low.

TPS adjustment.

I had the same symptoms with my'90. I loosened the TPS, increased RPM by hand until it did the surge, adjusted the TPS 'til no surge. tightened TPS...Went wheeling :-)

If your PCV valve is plugged it will cause her to surge as well  .... [thumbsup]

I have experienced this first hand a few times . ;) ...........
