How much trouble is it to use the automatic trans out of a 2wd sidekick in a SAMI?
I pulled the 1.6 and thinking about go back for the transmission.

3 speed or 4 speed? The 3 speed you'll have to widen the tranny tunnel some. There is no wiring needed except for a 12v source to lock up the converter.
The 4 speed is going to need all the wiring, and it's longer. You'll have to shorten the intermediate shaft either way.

I believe if you try to use a 2wd 4 speed that you will have to move the transfer case back.  Since when you use a 2wd 3 speed auto or a 2wd 5 speed manual (they are both the same length), the intermediate shaft has to be shortened to a single ujoint shaft (or practically a back to back 2 ujoint shaft).  The 2wd 4 speed is either 3 or 4 inches longer than the others, so you won't have room to run an intermediate shaft, with everything in the stock locations.

Good points. I forgot that with the 3speed/5speed that it made the shaft that short. For some reason I was thinking about 1/2 the length. So with the 4 speed I agree that you'd probably have to move it back.

OK the AUTO I have is 3in longer than the stock sami 5speed. So I am guess its a 3 speed auto.
Glad I went back for the trans now.
So Shorten the shaft to a sinlge u-joint and wire up 12v for the lock up.
thanks for the info guys

If it has a metal vacuum line that runs along the passenger side of the tranny and to a round metal vacuum modulator on the backside of the tranny (right behind the pan), then it is a 3 speed.

X2.  The only thing I did different was how I cut the floor.  I used his writeup on the driver side with horrible results.  On the Pass side I cut a strait line and the notched at the ends.  Looked alot better when done.  Just my couple pennies.  Everything else was exactly the same.
