looking around for a new rig half ton to 3/4 ton gasser, I would never leave a diesel alone enough to make a transmission survive....

I like the looks of the 1500hd but the gas mileage is killing it....my buddy said something about his titan being great....what about an 05 ram hemi?

trying to stay below 15000

needs

4x4
ext cab or crew cab short bed
decent mileage
good power

The transmissions are not that bad. I would not trade my dodge for any gasser. Even if I had to spend $1600 for an Airdog lift pump system and new VP44 this week. Get a dodge and put a new valve body in and get a deep pan.

You should be able to find one for $15000. I only paid 18k for mine 4 years ago. I'm sick of driving my sammy. My injection pump took a dump a week ago. I got the new one in sat only to find that I have a wiring problem also. Still I'm really happy with my truck.

I got a SMR valve body kit for mine was about $250. It made a big difference in the way it shifts and locks up. I think I got my pan on ebay but I don't remember what it cost. If you are going to buy one I would also get a performance lift pump. That is what I just did on mine. I had a wiring issue that was killing my pump which in turn kills the injection pump. These trucks have some common problems but once you take care of them they are  great tow rigs.

Lift pump takes the fuel from the tank to the injection pump. Just what it says, lift not pressure. :)

It's those few folks that are very vocal who have bought 2 per year or 3 - 4 VP44's in less then 50K that scare me.
At $1200 - $1400 a pop that will buy a lot a fuel and maybe even a full out custom auto tranny.

Me ???  I'd aim for a late model Chevy X-cab 1500 or 2500 HD Gas

Bump up the auto trans with the common performance towing mods + Super cooler.   See Trans Dapt or Your favorite Camper Pulling Forum.

2000 - 2005 Chev / GMC trucks should be plentiful and cheap.

2wd & some 4wd can see 20 MPG Hwy.

The lift pump I got was $500 but it will support well over 500 rwhp. If you get a gasser at least get a 2500.

I have an '06 Dodge Quad Cab 4x4 Hemi 1/2 ton and it tows like mad!  That motor is great for low end grunt - not so much accelerating from 60-80 though.
Anyway, towing my Sammy in the highway I get 17-19mpg.  Around town is much worse, but that could be because it is so much fun from light to light.   ::)  lol

2003 F150 (Tim, youve seen my truck at previous events).  driving round I get about 14-18 mix mpgs, towing I can get anywhere from 6-15 mpgs, depends on loads and conditions.
