I've been through all 40+ pages of the sami diesel forum but haven't heard anyone talk of using the 190d mercedes engine, this is my upcoming project, I already have the benz with a salvage title and only 130k original miles. Anyone have a reason why this motor and it's tranny wouldn't be a decent swap, It's a 2.2 liter NA and makes almost 80hp but is pretty compact

I don't see why you couldn't use it with some fabbing but its probably heavier and you may have a hard time getting parts and paying more for Mercedes stuff. I think they only made those 2.2's for two years from 1984–1986 didn't they? Probably not a lot of aftermarket support either.

Post some pics when you get started. It will be an interesting thread, eh.

Nick,
My guess would be that is because most folks who get a 190D keep it until they are done.  They last forever, drive fantastic and get 35+MPG.  Is yours an automatic or manual tranny?  Is the car repairable?

I have a 1973 MBZ 220D, 2.2L NA,4Sp Manual with about the same mileage on it that I am wanting to put in my Sammi buggy chassis.  The biggest problem is that even though the Benz has rust issues in the worst places underneath, it still drives like a dream and gets a solid 30MPG no matter how you drive it.
I have never measured the 190D engine but I think it would make a GREAT candidate for a Sammi swap.

Ok so here she is, motor is an OM601 145k original miles. 2.2 liter factory N/a

I will be running the benz auto which ive read has a 4.23 : 1 first gear.

The turbo pictured is from a Mitsubishi mighty max 2.3 liter turbo diesel, should be sized appropriately and I will waste gate it a 7-8 psi which should give me around 100 hp and 135 ft lb very safely.

The motor will be sitting another 2-3 inches closer to the Firewall for final mounting.

Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions?

Too cool.  Looking forward to following your project.  Mercedes are a lot easier to find and less expensive than VW Diesels out here in southern Arizona.

This looks cool--I'm not real familiar with that engine, but it'll be neat to see how this goes, and how well it fits!

So engine is mounted, it fits great! I will run an electric fan as a pusher with the factory mercedes radiator. This thing never runs hot anyway:thumbsup:

Tomorrow Im going to try and finish the trans crossmember before work, and ill use another one of the part number 2265 isolators. the transfercase is sitting it's stock location and aligns with the trans great! however if i leave it there, the distance from the trans output to the t case input flange is only 6 inches. I wonder if it is even possible for the intermediate shaft to be that short.

Thoughts and comments appreciated.
